They both are important for the effective and efficient teaching and learning process, however, a curriculum has a wider scope and is often difficult for students to understand. What Is Syllabus?
The syllabus is a part of the curriculum which concerns the selection and the sequence of the content to be taught in a program. It is an outline and summary of the topics that have to be covered in the course, and unlike the prescriptive curriculum, the syllabus is a descriptive document. A syllabus can be constructed by the different exam boards like CBSE, ICSE or State Boards, and it is shared with the students and teachers so that they can perform their duties well.
Types Of Syllabus
Formal Syllabus: A formal or structural syllabus is a syllabus which is designed according to the topics, this kind of syllabus is usually designed for language courses. And the course of content in such syllabus is usually a collection of forms or structures which are necessary for language teaching. Such as teaching English grammar in a structured way like nouns, verbs, adjectives, statements, clauses, phrases etc.

Situational Syllabus: In the situational syllabus, the English language is used as per the situation at the time, which situation can be real or imaginary. And a situation involves various participants and the activities which are done by them. This syllabus is used to teach second language grammar to the students and get them to use it in daily conversation in formal or informal ways. For example, to pay the electricity bill, attend an English teacher’s class on the teacher app.
Skill-Based Syllabus: Skill-based syllabus involves the teaching of a collection of skills that are required to use the language fluently. The main purpose of this syllabus is to make the students or learners develop the skills that they can use to excel in their language knowledge and usage. Skill-based syllabus mixes the linguistic competencies like pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar with the general type like listening to the language, writing paragraphs and lengthy contents, speaking and giving oral speeches etc.
Content-Based Syllabus: In a content-based syllabus the focus of teachers is on teaching students about the content or information of the course using the language which students are learning. Although teaching language is not the central theme of this syllabus, it does play an important role. The content-based syllabus is concerned with information and making it comprehensible for the students.
Task-Based Syllabus: In the tasked-based syllabus students are required to perform complex and purposeful tasks using the language they are learning. The tasks given to the students are given with the purpose of language learning but the content of the task also matters so that students do develop extra knowledge and skills. For example, the teacher can first show a project model to students on the live teaching app and then instruct students to make that model and write an analysis report on it.
Mixed Syllabus: As its name suggests mixed syllabus is the combination of the various syllabus, the course content created in this provides knowledge to students with a balance of practical and theoretical aspects.
